About this medication
EXENATIDE (ex EN a tide) treats type 2 diabetes. It works by increasing insulin levels in your body, which decreases your blood sugar (glucose). It also reduces the amount of sugar released into your blood and slows down your digestion. Changes to diet and exercise are often combined with this medication.
How should you use this medication?
This medication is injected under the skin. You will be taught how to prepare and give it. Take it as directed on the prescription label at the same time every 7 days. Keep taking it unless your care team tells you to stop. It is important that you put your used autoinjectors in a special sharps container. Do not put them in a trash can. If you do not have a sharps container, call your pharmacist or care team to get one. A special MedGuide will be given to you by the pharmacist with each prescription and refill. Be sure to read this information carefully each time. This medication comes with INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE. Ask your pharmacist for directions on how to use this medication. Read the information carefully. Talk to your pharmacist or care team if you have questions. Talk to your care team about the use of this medication in children. While it may be prescribed for children as young as 10 years for selected conditions, precautions do apply.
What are the possible side effects of this medicine?
Side effects that you should report to your care team as soon as possible:
Allergic reactions--skin rash, itching, hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
Gallbladder problems--severe stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, fever
Kidney injury--decrease in the amount of urine, swelling of the ankles, hands, or feet
Pancreatitis--severe stomach pain that spreads to your back or gets worse after eating or when touched, fever, nausea, vomiting
Thoughts of suicide or self-harm, worsening mood, feelings of depression
Thyroid cancer--new mass or lump in the neck, pain or trouble swallowing, trouble breathing, hoarseness
Unusual bruising or bleeding Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report these to your care team if they continue or are bothersome):
Diarrhea
Loss of appetite
Nausea
Pain, redness, or irritation at injection site
Upset stomach

BYDUREON (exenatide extended-release) is a prescription medication used to improve blood sugar control in adults and children 10 years and older with type 2 diabetes mellitus, alongside diet and exercise. Bydureon is not recommended for first-line therapy or for those with type 1 diabetes. It's available as an injectable suspension in a single-dose tray and an autoinjector pen (BYDUREON BCise). The recommended dosage is 2 mg injected under the skin once every seven days, with or without meals.
Before using

Inform your doctor about any other medications or supplements you are taking, as drug interactions can occur.
Be aware of potential side effects, including nausea, diarrhea, and injection site reactions, and know when to seek medical attention for more serious reactions.
BYDUREON may interact with certain medications, including antibiotics and birth control pills. It's recommended to take these medications at least one hour before using BYDUREON.
If you are switching from immediate-release exenatide (Byetta) to BYDUREON, you may experience a temporary increase in blood sugar levels.
Do not use BYDUREON if you have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2), or if you have had a severe allergic reaction to exenatide.
Be aware of the risk of thyroid C-cell tumors associated with BYDUREON. Discuss this with your doctor and be vigilant for symptoms such as neck swelling or hoarse voice.
Stop using BYDUREON and seek medical attention immediately if you experience severe abdominal pain, with or without vomiting, as this could be a symptom of pancreatitis.
Never share injection pens or needles with others, as this can transmit infections.
